I have lived in Italy and Egypt. Both have efficient rail systems with the Italians still being the most successful in regard to tracking and adhering to time schedules. I agree that a coast to coast rail service is counter productive especially when the trend is to reduce automobiles and begin the introduction of necessary federal restrictions against long distance travel. Tomorrows society in the U.S. will need to have a more localized point of convergence, with the people concentrating on issues related to local day to day affairs within their own community.
